There are few things that bring up as much judgment than money. For example, if I made a poor investment decision, or I spent too much money, or got over-charged, or missed a good deal at the Amazon prime day, my inner critic goes off like a firecracker on the 4th July. And since money permeates so many aspects of our life, the critic gets the microphone (and sometimes the megaphone) more often than I’d like.
The way I like to handle “Jimmy” the critic is to practice observation versus judgment. To look at the situation through a non-judgmental lens and pay attention to the facts. For example, if I bought a particular crypto-currency high and then it dropped, it doesn’t make me an idiot or an irresponsible fool. It simply means I lost some money, reducing my net worth.
Staying away from judgment reduces my emotional volatility which allows me to recognize the mistake. It keeps me in the game rather than bailing out. Plus, it feels better to not beat up on myself all the time, trusting the process and harvesting the lessons for future growth.
So please be nice to yourself. Keep learning and growing. Keep reaching out and asking for help.
